Catherine Ford was born Bloomsbury in London. Because her father's departure the family, it was looked after by her mom, grandmother, and godparents. She suffered from an anxiety disorder based on words as a young teenager. Ford began to become attracted to acting in her teenaged years, and joined the National Youth Theatre. Ford was accepted to Sylvia Young Theatre School but after one week decided she didn't fit in. Ford, instead of applying to Central School of Speech and Drama and securing a place at the third time, applied and won an admission to the Central School of Speech and Drama. Shaun Dingwall would play Pete Tyler who is a character that was recurring for Doctor Who. Ford was able to graduate in 1993, but she made her television debut on a show in 1992 called Surgical Spirit. She adopted the title Catherine Tate. Tate appeared on TV in the Nineties in shows like The Bill and Men Behaving Badly. Tate was also a regular performer in theatre and eventually joined in the Royal Shakespeare Company during its season 2000-2001. But Tate quickly began gaining recognition for her stand-up comedic performances that she incorporated into her repertoire in 1996.
